My name is Onaje Grant-Simmonds (@grimmonds_studios) and I am a teen painter based in Brooklyn, New York. I have always been an artist, and my passion has shifted from the fields of animation to illustration to fine arts. I have advanced my painting skills through a workshop at the Art Students League of New York, pre-college programs at Pratt, Cooper, and MICA, and will continue my studies as a freshman at Brown University.
Given the task of designing a shirt for Runaway New York, I challenged myself by making the design political. I was set on representing black women in some manner, as I have seen them lead the Black Lives Matter movement—and many others before. However, I wanted to avoid romanticizing the pain black women go through in fighting for black people. I aimed to amplify their voices. Thus, I put a powerful quote from Angela Davis on the back of the shirt. On an 18 by 24-inch bristol board, I drew Davis’ eye, then digitally vignetted it onto the black shirt.
